Light

In autumn,
the trees light up.
A fire takes hold of them,
and they glow,
radiant
in their true colors
of gold and rust and red.
They shine and glisten,
aflame with life,
autumn’s light show —
oh, how the sun shines through!

If only such beauty and brilliance
would stay,
lingering longer,
coloring our lives,
warming our hearts.
But each bright leaf
stays only a short while.
At its appointed time,
it dries,
curls,
falls gently
to the earth below.
Until next autumn,
when the renewed trees light up again.

We, too, light up.
We shine and glisten,
aflame with life,
the Maker’s light show —
oh, how the Son shines through!

If only such beauty and brilliance
would stay,
lingering longer,
coloring our lives,
warming our hearts.
But each bright life
stays only a short while.
At our appointed time,
we dry,
curl,
fall gently
to the earth below.

Until one day,
when creation is done groaning
and our renewed bodies light up again.
The Spirit will take hold of us,
and we’ll glow,
radiant
in our true colors,
aflame with life,
warmed by the
light
and beauty
and brilliance
of Christ
the true Tree of Life
and our hearts will be warm forever.
