On sleepless nights

On sleepless nights
when the mind churns 
and the heavy eyelids seek rest 
but the mind cannot find it — 
Lord, bring me to You.

Let me not waste these starlit hours
in anxious wrestling
or meaningless pacification
but spend them in Your presence —
pouring myself in praise, 
meditating on your might,
worshipping through your Word.

Healing medicine for our anxious minds

“Anxiety in a man’s heart weighs him down,” Proverbs 12:25 says.  For those of us who struggle with anxiety of any sort, we know all too well how true this is.

The world offers many suggestions to lift us from our anxieties, things like exercise, meditation, taking medicine or supplements, and laughter. Things like these are helpful and good; many are from hand of God.  However, I must confess: I sometimes reach for these as a pick-me-up or a quick-fix; they become my go-to form of therapy.  And while they might offer me some relief, beneath the surface, those anxieties are still there.

A handful of quietness

Better is a handful of quietness
than two hands full of toil and a striving after wind. 

— Ecclesiastes 4:6

At the beginning of this period of social isolation, my wise preacher husband said in a Facebook Live session that this time of solitude and, for some, rest from work, had the potential to be very beneficial to our spiritual lives — if we would let it.  If we would choose to spend time in quietness with God.
